German Philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) once said; “Life swings like a pendulum, backward and forward between pain and bordem.” I’m sure he was a fun guy to be around.
While that is not exactly my experience of life, I do have a familiar pendulum swing that I’m working on trying to tame. Mine swings between VERY HEALTHY and NOT VERY HEALTHY. In fact, I’ve been having a shocker of late.
Two months ago, I was feeling high on life, healthy, light both energetically and physically and in tune with my body’s needs. Now, after partying across New York recently like it was 1999 – yeeha! – I’ve struggled to rein it in and get back to a healthy routine.
For the past six weeks my coffee, wine and food addictions have all been out in full force… and yes, my health is now suffering because of it. It really does suck that all these things are:
a) so enjoyable at the time, and;
b) have such disastrous health side effects
It sux even more to be reminded of research highlighting good health as the number one factor influencing our happiness. (Read more about that here.) What I know for sure is that not only has my happiometer been down of late, but my willingness to play full tilt at life has been waning as well.
The symptoms surrounding my unhealthy excess (2 coffees, daily wine etc) include energetic sluggishness, foggy-headedness and a bit of the bloat. In fact, my 7 yo son has taken to giving my stomach a good wobble each morning and saying: “I love your new jelly belly, mamma.” Everybody has their tipping point.
So, today, I’m sending the pendulum back in it’s rightful direction with Momentum for Life’s six week spring cleanse. In my experience, there’s been no one like MFL’s founder Leila Lutz and her team to get my health back on track.
So, what are the basic rules?
DRINK No sugary drinks, no alcohol, no caffeine… and lots of water.
Tip Use the following equation to figure out how much water you should be drinking every day > body weight in kilos x 0.033. Example: 70kg x 0.033 = 2.3 L
DIET No processed, sugary, starchy foods. No dairy, no grains, no legumes.
Tip Fruit restricted to the low sugar variety including berries (blueberries, raspeberries, blackberries etc) and green apples (not red). Lots of green vegeatbles. No other carbohydrates as a general rule.
I’ll blog about my cleanse experience once a week to keep you in the loop, share some beuatifully cleansing recipes and to keep myself honest.
